Distinguished Lecture | Norman Rockwell and the Power and Process of Published Art: An Evening with Curator Stephanie Haboush Plunkett and Award-Winning Illustrator Tim O’Brien

Hidden in plain sight, illustration has, through the centuries, transformed publications, functional objects, and digital platforms into message-bearers conveying a wide range of ideas that have reflected and shaped an ever-changing world. Illustrators are called upon to act as visual problem-solvers while remaining true to their personal artistic aesthetics.

Presented in conjunction with the Museum's current exhibition, "Norman Rockwell: From Camera to Canvas," this discussion brings illustrator Tim O’Brien and Norman Rockwell Museum Chief Curator Stephanie Haboush Plunkett together to explore how illustrators approach their work while embracing this challenge. A true modern master of American illustration, Tim O’Brien has described himself as a “traditional oil painter,” a sentiment that belies his brilliance as a cutting-edge visual storyteller for our times. He will offer insights into the ways that realist illustrators like Rockwell and others work, the methods that they use, and the value of human-made art in the age of AI.
